Bullies are basically cowards. More often than not they will cave in when challenged. They are so used to being dominant that when challenged they may make a final attempt at bullying and if that fails will often become submissive. In other words, they can dish it out, but they can’t take it.
Donald Trump and many of his supporters are humorless bullies. Trump and people like him are the ones who, for the last 8 years were critical of every move Barrack Obama made. The onslaught began on election night and still has not let up. It likely will continue long after he’s out of office. Some of Obama’s detractors didn’t even attempt to hide their racist leanings. They attacked the President, his wife and daughters and even his deceased parents and grandparents.
For an extended period of time, Donald Trump himself led the racist attacks with his ridiculous birther movement. He was relentless in questioning Obama’s citizenship and several times promised absolute proof that the President was not an American Citizen, but he never produced a single iota of evidence to that effect. Never in modern history has a President been the subject of such outright hatred. And through it all, he handled it with a grace and dignity very few of us would have been able to muster. He and Michelle were and are a class act.
Now the tables are turned, but when President Elect Donald Trump is criticized, these very same people rise up righteously and say, “Give the guy a chance, he hasn’t even been sworn in yet.” Well, I’m willing to give him as much of a chance as many of his supporters gave President Obama, but there’s a major difference on how I and my friends approach criticizing Trump. We offer something they never had – it’s called the truth. They quote Fox news, we offer verifiable facts; they repeat rumors, we fact check before speaking; they lie and we don’t. They quote the constitution, we’ve actually read it and they entertain and allow racist and bigoted language, we don’t.
This is not a Democrat versus Republican fight or liberal versus conservative – it is truth against lies, thinking against reacting and compassion and empathy against selfishness. The Trump administration is just now being assembled and already it is rife with contradictions. They speak of small government and keeping it out of people’s lives while in fact making it more intrusive as they set out to limit free speech, religion, association, sexual preference and a woman’s right to choose.. They talk about the wise use of taxpayer dollars and then propose using those dollars to support private education instead of our public schools which is a constitutional violation. They talk about freedom and propose limiting liberties and violating the right to due process and finally, they speak of streamlining government services and then nominate managers whose only goal is to eliminate them. The worst of all contradictions, though, is when they contend that tax breaks for the rich and modifying services like Medicare and Social Security will help the middle class when in fact those ideas will cause irreparable harm.
I have long contended that Donald Trump is the most unqualified person to ever run for the office. He has shown an amazing ignorance of the constitution he will soon swear to defend, and of the Government he will soon lead. He has proven by his own words and actions that he is not to be trusted. His cabinet appointees are an extension of his bullying personality. Almost every one of them is either opposed to the stated goals of the agency they will head or is uniquely unqualified to run it. If you doubt what I say, look at his nominees for some of the top U.S. Government jobs.
Dr. Ben Carson a brain surgeon with no administrative experience and the same amount of knowledge about housing will head Housing and Urban Development (HUD) which runs programs intended to support homeownership, increase safe and affordable rental housing, reduce homelessness and fight housing discrimination. This is like having a nursing assistant do brain surgery. Being as President-Elect Trump is a past violator of HUD housing discrimination rules I wonder how strict Carson’s enforcement will be.
Scott Pruitt Trump’s choice to head the Environmental Protection agency and the former Oklahoma Attorney General has repeatedly sued the agency he is about to lead over environmental rules and regulations. Now that in and of itself is not outrageous. What is outrageous is that he did so in direct cooperation with fossil fuel companies.
Betsy DeVos an outspoken critic of public education will run the
Department of Education. DeVos, 58, chairs the American Federation for Children, an advocacy group that has aggressively pushed to expand charter schools and school voucher programs that provide families with public money to spend on private school tuition.
Rex W. Tillerson, the president and chief executive of Exxon Mobil was tapped to be the new Secretary of State. Tillerson’s been deeply involved in Exxon’s oil-drilling projects in Russia, and he has a personal relationship with President Vladimir Putin. The man U.S. Intelligence agencies said was behind U.S. election hacks. The Secretary of State position is the number one cabinet job. One of the ways the U.S. and other nations keep the rogue nation’s in line is by introducing sanctions. ExxonMobil has long lobbied against them and while Tillerson says he doesn’t think they are effective, the truth is that sanctions interfered with ExxonMobil’s business opportunities.
And, former Texas Governor Rick Perry, the man who as a presidential candidate wanted to abolish the Department of Energy but couldn’t remember its name, has been nominated to lead it. The Energy Department oversees a wide variety of areas. Among other things it maintains the nation’s arsenal of nuclear weapons, runs national laboratories that conduct scientific and energy technology research and is responsible for environmental clean-up efforts. Perry has no qualifications for any of those functions.
Trump also appointed Andrew Puzder, CEO of Carl’s Jr. and Hardees to be Labor Secretary. Puzder is a vocal critic of government regulation, opposes an increase in the minimum wage and broader overtime pay. and is on the record supporting more robotic and fewer human employees because robots don’t call in sick or ask for raises.
These nominations seem to have been born in chaos and then nurtured by Dr. Strangelove. The President-Elect has in effect nominated avid deregulators to regulate. Had a Democrat made selections like these the Republicans would have him or her impeached on the first day in office.
Unfortunately, there is little chance of these nominations being defeated because the U.S. Senate is controlled by Trump’s party, a party which has shown no interest in opposing anything he has done or intends to do. Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell and most of the other republican leaders have shown their true colors and become sycophants rather than standing up to the bully in their midst. These appointments are so contrary to the best interests of America it is as though Trump has given the finger to the nation and the world.
So if you are a Trump supporter you can play ostrich, stick your head in the sand and ignore the truth. but the facts speak for themselves. It has often been said that a man’s past will be reflected in his future decisions. So I would be remiss if I did not remind you of his past. Here’s a sharply abbreviated list of Trump transgressions.
